Discover the Magic

of Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region

The Jungfrau Region is one of Switzerland's most majestic regions, overflowing with waterfalls, lakes, mountains, rivers, and everything you would expect to find on a Switzerland postcard. If you are going to spend a week traveling in Switzerland, the Jungfrau Region is a great area to choose. Here are our top 5 places you cannot miss in the Jungfrau Region.

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

1. Lauterbrunnen Valley

Arguably one of the most Instagrammable spots in the Jungfrau Region, you may have seen the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland come across your social feed a time or two, and for a good reason. Lauterbrunnen Valley is also nicknamed the Land of 72 Waterfalls, because indeed, that is how many waterfalls exist in this single valley. Nestled beneath the soaring waterfalls and magnificent Swiss Alps you will find the charming, typical alpine church in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Alongside the cowbells, you can hear the church bells echoing throughout the valley as you stroll through the quaint streets of Lauterbrunnen Valley.

murren, switzerland

2. Mürren

Located at the top of the mountain alongside the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland is the quaint little car-free vilage of Mürren. We would consider Mürren a hidden gem of the Jungfrau Region because not only does it have some of the most epic views of the Swiss Alps, but you have to take a gondola to the top of the mountain to get there. Once you arrive you can spend the day strolling the alleys lined with typical mountain Chalets, take a picnic on one of the becnhes overlooking the valley, or indulge in a cheese fondue at one of the traditional Swiss restaurants on the edge of the mountain.

grindelwald, switzerland

3. Grindelwald

At the base of the epic Eiger mountain, the charming Alpine village of Grindelwald is a perfect homebase for exploring the Jungfrau Region. Whether you plan on skiing in winter or hiking in summer, Grindelwald is situated in a strategic position so you can easily do either. The Grindelwald Bahnhof ("Bahnhof" means "Trainstation" in German) is located in the middle of town, making it convenient to catch a train or bus to explore different parts of the Jungfrau Region. Grindelwald doesn't lack accomodation options, supermarkets, or restaurants, making it a great place to stay if you plan on exploring the Jungfrau Region for some days. On our 5-day trip we stayed at the Derby Hotel Grindelwald, which we can highly recommend, as it is strategically situatied next to the Grindelwald Bahnhof. Grindelwald is also the starting point for going to Jungfraujoch and Grindelwald First, more to come on those places...

Grindelwald, First

4. First

Above the village of Grindelwald, you can reach the scenic summit of First by either an 8.7km hike or a 25-minute gondola ride. During the summer, First is a hotspot for outdoor adventure and hiking. You can explore the surrounding trails, hike 3km to lake Bachalpsee, or pack a picnic to enjoy on the edge of the mountain while watching the hangliders soar alongside the alps. If you're feeling more adventerous, you can do the First Cliff Walk built into the side of the cliff, rent a trottbike scooter or mountain cart, or try the First Flyer or Glider.

5. Jungfraujoch

Though it may be one of the most touristic places in the Jungfrau Region, the Jungfraujoch, also known as Top of Europe, is a once in a lifetime, bucketlist place to visit. Located 3,463 meters above sea level, Jungfraujoch gets its name "Top of Europe" for being home to the highest train station in all of Europe. From the Sphinx Observatory located at the top, you will have breathtaking views of the Bernese Alps, Jungfrau and Mönch, and be surrounded by glaciers and snow, all year long.
